Things to do for interns and students in Cape Town

So much to do, so little time. But not if you are doing your internship in Cape Town, which generally keeps interns in the Mother City around five months. Most students spend their time in Cape Town sensibly, and divide their time between work and pleasure wisely. Especially when it comes to having fun in Cape Town, there are millions of activities and things to do, see, feel and taste.

Besides the cultural sites and tourist hotspots, Cape Town offers a broad range in sports: surfing, kite surfing, hiking, cycling, play golf, sailing, snorkelling and even scuba diving can all be done in Cape Town. Are you somewhat less sporty but like being around the beach? Capetonian sunsets (including a couple of sundowners) are absolutely amazing.

When it comes to beauty, one cannot forget the Cape Winelands. A drive through Stellenbosch and Franschhoek offers both Capetonians wanting to escape the city, as well as students and youngster looking for some good wine, a great weekend outing. In Somerset West, Paarl, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek some of the hidden gems of South African wine estates can be found: all within an hours drive of Cape Town.

Cape Town Nightlife

The main place to be to feel part of Cape Town's nightlife is Long Street. A loud and lively street in the heart of Cape Town filled with restaurants, internet cafes, bars and backpackers. Popular bars for young locals and international students are Irish pubs like Long Street Cafe and The Dubliner. The best cocktails on Long Street to start the evening can be ordered at Mojito, The Waiting Room or in Fiction.

More the clubbin type? Then head to Jade Lounge in Green Point, or get yourself in at Club Chevelle, Tyger Tyger or The Bang Bang Club. Whoever is afraid of not being seen in the right place at the right time with the right crowd, heads to Cafe Caprice in Camps Bay on Sunday afternoon, to mingle with the young, (wannabe) rich and famous. More up for chilled out sundowners while famous South African band Goldfish is playing on the background? Then make sure not to miss Sunday's sunsets at beach Club La Med.

Best activities in Cape Town

An overview of the most adventurous, fun, interesting, exciting or chilled out activities to do in and around Cape Town.

Visit Robben Island

South Africa is probably best known in the world for its history, which included the racial Apartheid era. Although the country isn't proud of it, it indeed is good to be aware of those horrible years of oppression and injustice. Nelson Mandela is the symbol of South Africa's freedom, since it was him and his ANC-party who, after 27 years of imprisonment, managed to finally abolish Apartheid. Virtually every tourist visiting Cape Town heads to the V&A Waterfront to get on the boat to Robben Island in order to get even a tiny grasp of what life under these circumstances felt like.

Climb Table Mountain

Cape Town's number one landmark is Table Mountain. The iconic mountain is visual from literally every point in the city. Explorer Antonio de Saldanha was the first person ever to climb the mountain in 1503. Since he left his footsteps on Table Mountain, millions of people have followed. Even though you have the option of taking the cable car to see the fantastic view all over Cape Town and far beyond, the ultimate satisfaction really only comes after having climbed it by foot. There are around 30 different routes to climb it, differing in the level of difficulty and effort it will take you to achieve the top.

Magic Moonwalk on Lion's Head

Once a month it's full moon in Cape Town, which means you can climb Lion's Head and watch one of the most amazing sunsets you will ever see.

Skydiving and bungee jumping in Cape Town

Are you not afraid of heights and looking for some adventure during your stay in Cape Town? Then skydiving or bungee jumping most definitely is your cup of tea. You will need to drive some 500km from Cape Town to get to the Bloukrans Bridge, where you can experience the highest bungee jump (216m) in the world. To skydive, you can just stay in Cape Town. Take the freefall and enjoy the ride!

Shark Cage diving

Whoever has heart problems, can stop reading now. The real daredevils seeking for the ultimate thrill can go diving with sharks. Well, that means diving with sharks from a cage - the immensely popular sport of shark cage diving in Gansbaai, about 2 hours from Cape Town.

Have a braai at Mzoli's in the Gugulethu township

Mzoli's is a restaurant, butcher and party spot all in one. Over the years, Mzoli's has become one of the hottest places to be near Cape Town, especially since it offers you the possibility to visit the Gugulethu township, meet locals from this township and eat a great dinner with them during a typical South African 'braai' (barbeque). Sunday afternoon braais at Mzoli's nowadays require advanced booking.

Visit the penguins @ Boulders beach

True, they smell horrible, but they still are extremely cute at the same time. Visit Boulder's Beach near Simon's Town - one of South Africa's oldest cities - for an up, close and personal with the local penguin colony. Choose to take a walk on the beachfront as to remain on a safe, somewhat smell-free distance, or choose to go kayaking or swimming in between the penguins.

Water sports in Cape Town

Located in between two oceans and several lagoons, Cape Town is one of the best places in the world for various types of active water sports: surfing, kite surfing, wind surfing or body boarding at one of the many beaches of Table Bay, Blouberg or False Bay.

Wine tasting in the Cape Winelands

Want to escape the city for a couple of hours, a day or a weekend? Take the highway from Cape Town and drive in approximately 45 minutes to Stellenbosch and Franschhoek to enjoy the best views of the Cape Winelands. Ideal for a Saturday- or Sunday afternoon wine tasting in one of the many beautiful wine estates.
