ABOUT INTERNSHIPS ABROAD

Internships or practical training placements are an important part of the curriculum of most European universities. Internships, mostly planned in the 3rd and 4th study year, are work-related learning experiences that provide students and new graduates with an opportunity to gain important knowledge and skills in a particular career field. In general, during an internship a student will work inside a company for 3 to 6 months.

An internship will provide the student with relevant experience to include in a resume and with professional references and networking contacts.

Since many employers today seek employees with cross- cultural competence, more and more

European students go abroad for their internship. Interning abroad offers students and new graduates an experience that may be one of the most valuable of their college education.
Cultural exchange is an essential aspect of interning abroad and provides students with a basic understanding of business practices associated with different cultural norms and values.

Students who are interning abroad are able to offer a global perspective in their work.

Interns can do many different duties and tasks. Participating in the day to day activities gives students a good insight on what it would be like to actually work in a organization or specific industry. Besides working on day to day activities, students often participate in research; writing; attending meetings, functions and planned activities; as well as computer input and database management.

There is a difference between the kind of work a third year student or a fourth and final year student can do in your organization.

During their internship a third year student usually has his or her first practical experience. The main focus of a third year internship period is to gain knowledge and skills in a particular field of work. Third year students can do all kinds of different tasks and projects within your company. They are more flexible and hands on than fourth and final year interns.

Final year students are almost professionals and have more theoretical and practical knowledge than third year students. During their internship they need to do an assignment that they can use for their final graduation. This assignment can be: market research, cost price analyses, writing a production or marketing plan etc. On a more strategic level a fourth year student can be very useful for an organization. They have good theoretical background and already some practical work experience. Keep in mind that a fourth year student needs to focus on their assignment.

During a internship the student needs to be able to learn and work on a level where he or she can develop into a young professional. An internship task therefore must be challenging for the student.
